Fracking is already a nationwide debate. Soon, it might become a nationwide practice.
The oil and gas extraction method is now being considered for the vast oil reserves in Southern California. While fracking can work for both oil and gas, in this case “tight oil,” or oil trapped within rock underground, is the target.
Needless to say — you’ve heard about fracking before, right? — fracking the California dirty oil reserves would be a bad idea. Grist lists 10 reasons why, including noting the oil isn’t the “bridge fuel” that natural gas sometimes is described as.
The No. 1 reason in the list is that California’s tight oil is just as dirty as the tar sands in Canada, according to a score assigned by the California Air Resources Board.
