Alison Klayman’s documentary on Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei started out as profile of an exhibition of the artist before becoming a fascinating look at his political leanings and an examination of the perilous process of making art under the eye of a tyrannical government. New York magazine called the film one of the 10 best documentaries in 2012, and The New York Times called it “a galvanizing documentary” and “an intimate portrait of the artist.”
