Free Comic Book Day

Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Time Warp Comics, 3105 28th St., Boulder, 303-443- 4500

As the old saying goes, April showers bring May comic books. For more than a decade now, the first Saturday of May has been “Free Comic Book Day,” in which comic publishers provide shops with a long list of giveaways and special releases.

And here in Boulder, the place to celebrate is Time Warp Comics.

Not only will the shop have over 50 free comics available, but Batman should be chilling in his Batmobile and a couple Storm Troopers if you’re lucky. Just don’t sit on their laps and ask for a jetpack, cause that’s a bit creepy.

Customers at Time Warp will be allowed to choose three comics from this year, along with three comics from each of the previous years.

Wayne Winsett, owner of Time Warps says that comics are a great way to spark reading interest in children.

“It’s a gateway drug to better reading,” Winsett says.

There will a costume contest for kids under 12 and lots of local comic artists doing signings.

A few of the anticipated free titles this year are Guardians of the Galaxy, which is tied to the movie of the same name coming out this summer, and a Rocket Raccoon solo book, featuring a primary Guardians of the Galaxy character on his own. A few of the classics include Archie Digest, and Transformers vs GI Joe.
