The city of Boulder has launched a new business portal website to make it easier for individuals to find the information they need to successfully start and run a business in Boulder. Designed to make doing business in Boulder simple, the portal offers easyto-find information about the city’s business services. Before launching the business portal, information about Boulder’s business regulations and services was found only under individual city department webpages. The new portal centralizes important city resources from Community Planning, Licensing, Taxes, Economic Vitality and Environmental Action into one easy-to-navigate source. The portal also features access to a wide range of business resources provided by the Boulder Library and other area business partners.
The business portal has resources tailored for current, expanding, relocating and new businesses. Using the portal, businesses can find up-to-date information about incentives provided through the Economic Vitality and Environmental Affairs programs, and city staff contact information for business assistance. The business portal also offers an FAQ page based on suggestions from the local business community. There is also a new “doing business WITH the City” Web page, which includes information about requests for proposals, how to rent public facilities and special event regulations.

Kim and Jakes’ new holiday menu
Kim and Jake’s Cakes, a Boulder cake shop, just released their holiday menu. Designed to make the holidays less stressful, customers can choose between several specialty cakes and homemade pies, as well as items on the regular menu. Kim and Jake will be hosting a Holiday Open House on Friday, Nov. 19 from 3–6 p.m. Stop by the shop, located in the Table Mesa Shopping Center at 641 S. Broadway, to sample the holiday menu. Heatherwood wins $5,000 grant
Heatherwood Elementary is one of five U.S. schools that will receive a grant from Green Works naturally derived cleaners for successfully tracking their walk-to-school habits and collectively earning the most green footprints.
During the month of October, in honor of International Walk to School Day, elementary and middle school students and their families across the country laced up their sneakers to walk or strapped on their bike helmets to pedal to school instead of riding in a car. Participating families tracked their progress on the Green Works Facebook page to earn green footprints by recording their walking, playing games to win points, and offering green tips to their friends. The five schools with the most green footprints were chosen as winners.
Tea time Enjoy a Lafayette tradition, the Annual Holiday Tea, on Dec. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the library. Discover an afternoon of tea and treats, live music and a special potpourri of holiday tales presented by storyteller extraordinaire Susan Marie Frontczak. Tickets are $9 for adults and $6 for children (children ages 8-17 are welcome) and seniors (60 and older). Tickets are available at the library’s Check Out desk. The Lafayette Public Library is located at 775 W. Baseline Rd.
Volunteer for naturalist program
Boulder County Parks and Open Space is now accepting applications for the 2011 Volunteer Naturalist training class. They are looking for people with a passion for nature, some knowledge of local natural history and a strong desire to learn more and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with the public.
Volunteer Naturalists lead interpretive nature hikes in county parks, present public natural history slide programs, and provide hands-on environmental field experiences for Boulder County schools. A 10-week training program is required. Training includes an overview of the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department, including history, mission, and resource management; Native American history; geology; plants and ecosystems; forestry; wildlife and birds; agricultural lands and weed management; water resources; and interpretive programming and resources.
Training classes take place on Thursdays, Jan. 13 through March 17, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Longmont. Participants must be at least 18 years old and attend all training sessions. Because many of the requested programs are scheduled Monday-Friday during daytime hours, applicants must have some ongoing weekday availability.

Say cheese
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose, and of course, the annual Holiday Pet Photos at Longmont Humane Society.
This year residents will have two days to choose from, Nov. 20 and 21. Professional photographers lead by Marsha Steckling of Life Exposed Photography will be taking the portraits. Children and families are welcome, with or without pets. There will be two winter scenes to choose from, and Santa Claus will be available for both if requested.
Sessions will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days at the Longmont Humane Society dog-training center, 9595 Nelson Rd. The $20 cost includes photo session, digital CD copy of all photos taken and permission for personal use.
