Despite the severe cold on
Tuesday, Denver International Airport expects to keep all runways open and
remain operational.
But it is being affected by the
severe weather and canceled flights in the Midwest.
According to a recording made by
airport officials, DIA only received about seven-tenths of an inch of snow
overnight. Airport runways and Pena Boulevard have been cleared of the light
and powdery snowfall.
A combined 101 flights out of DIA
have been cancelled due to inclement weather nationwide, the recording said.
United has cancelled 51 flights, Frontier 19, Southwest 17, American seven,
Continental four, JetBlue two and Delta one.
But The Denver Post reported later in the day that the number of cancelled flights had more than doubled, to 230.
Officials said the cancellations
may fluctuate depending on changing conditions, and that people should call
their airline ahead of time or visit www.flydenver.com for more information on
the status of their flight.
Tuesdays tend to be slow travel
days, the recording said, so DIA wasn’t expecting a lot of people anyway. Officials do not anticipate many stranded travelers, but are urging that people going out
in the elements to wait for buses or shuttles dress warmly.
