Council takes on personhood
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, Boulder City Council will hold a public hearing on whether there should be a referendum on the city ballot in November regarding the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision that extended constitutional rights to corporations and equated money with free speech.
The hearing on the referendum, which was proposed by Councilmember Macon Cowles in response to the court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, will be held at 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Municipal Building, at Canyon and Broadway.

Weigh in on redrawing districts
Members of the commission to redraw, or “reapportion,” state legislative districts will visit Boulder on Monday, Aug. 15, as part of a statewide tour to discuss their proposed State House and Senate district maps.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the University Memorial Center, Room 247, at the University of Colorado Boulder.
The Colorado Reapportionment Commission is hosting 24 events throughout Colorado in August and early September. Following the public hearings, a final map will be approved and submitted to the State Supreme Court for review by the Oct. 7 deadline.
The commission is established by law every 10 years, following the U.S. Census. It consists of 11 members appointed by the governor, the chief justice of the Colorado Supreme Court and minority and majority leadership in the Senate and House.
Volunteer at Heil
Boulder County officials are looking for volunteers to help maintain Heil Valley Ranch on Sunday, Aug. 14. In exchange for breakfast and the beauty of Heil Valley Ranch, volunteers will be asked to help with a variety of projects designed to improve the ecosystem, including removing non-native weeds, raking duff from under pine trees, restoring a forestry stand, collecting native seed and repairing fences.

Free cooking lessons
Camp Culinary will offer free cooking lessons at the Boulder Farmers’ Market from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 13, and from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 17.
Chef Michael DeBoer, owner of Camp Culinary Boulder, will be giving the lessons to teach market-goers how to prepare the produce they buy there.
“Ratatouille is one of my favorite vegetable side dishes to prepare because of all the different flavors that go into making it,” he says. “August is the best time of year to make this dish, because almost all of the produce used to make it is at the peak of its seasonality. Summer squash and garlic is readily available, eggplant, sweet bell peppers and onions are starting to make their presence known, and tomatoes are not far away. So we have everything to cook up a classical dish from the Provencal region of France; add to that a bit of herbs and some olive oil, and we are off and running.”
Each demo is a free mini cooking class taught by a professional chef, using fresh Boulder Farmers’ Market produce, and when the lesson is over, the eating begins.
DeBoer volunteers four times a month to give cooking demos at the market.

Cabaret for a cause
HealthLinks Foundation, the nonprofit arm of HealthLinks Clinic, will present its second annual fundraiser, Cabaret for a Cause, on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Boulder Theater.
“We had such a tremendous response last year and raised over $60,000,” says Trudy Turvey, director and founder of the clinic and foundation. “It is especially gratifying to know that the money raised went to help cancer survivors and others with chronic ill nesses get the treatment they need.”
7NEWS anchor Mike Landess, himself a prostate cancer survivor, will be this year’s master of ceremonies. Additional performers include Chris Daniels and the Kings, Lisa Bell, Ron Ivory & One on One and L.A. singer/ songwriter Matt James. The evening will also feature a live auction and a dessert bar with assorted pastries and handmade chocolates.
The show starts at 8 p.m., but guests are encouraged to come early and enjoy the piano bar with pianist Dan Graeber.
An online “silent” auction is already under way. Interested shoppers can go to www.cabaretforacause.net to register for the auction and preview items that range from travel packages to jewelry to gift certificates. The bidding closes on Aug. 26.

Hill Flea hosts attractions
This Saturday, Aug. 13, the Hill Flea is hosting several special attractions, including a kids yoga program hosted by Core Power, a children’s story and song hour, a “Boot Camp Flash Mob,” live poetry by Innisfree, street food and an hour of local authors starting at 1 p.m. Choreographed dance performances will be held at 2 p.m. throughout the market, coordinated by the Fringe Festival. Local live bands will be mixed in throughout the day.
The market, which specializes in supporting recycled, reused, upcycled and local products, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It features everything from vintage clothes to recycled school supplies and is a celebration of sustainability, art and entrepreneurship.

Fourmile fundraiser set for Sept. 7
A celebratory fundraising dinner, “A Night at the Gold Hill Inn,” will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, to mark the one-year anniversary of the Fourmile Canyon Fire.
The event, which will be held from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., is intended to acknowledge the devastation while honoring the lives and communities that were saved.
The dinner and fundraiser will feature the collective culinary talents of some of Boulder’s best-known chefs, as well as an auction and live music by Romano Paoletti and KC Groves.
Dinner will be a five-course tasting menu, and each chef will prepare one course and pair it with an appropriate wine. Tickets are $200 per person. The attire is mountain casual.
Participating chefs include Dave Query of the Big Red F Restaurants, Eric Skokan of the Black Cat, Hugo Matheson of The Kitchen, Bradford Heap of Salt and Colterra, Bobby Stuckey and Lachlan MacKinnon- Patterson of Frasca, and Janos Wilder of Janos Restaurant in Tucson, Ariz.
All proceeds will be directed to two areas: the Foothills United Way Fourmile Fire Recovery Fund Mental Health Program, which provides residents of fire-affected areas with trauma counseling and other mental health services, and the Gold Hill, Sunshine, Sugarloaf and Fourmile volunteer fire departments.

Back to school stress-free
The Lafayette Public Library will host free workshops this month to help families deal with the stress of returning to school.
School registration forms to be completed; school fees to be paid; no more leisurely summer schedule; school supplies to be secured. It’s enough to frazzle the most organized and well-intentioned parent. During the workshops, participants will discuss “should-dos” and learn how to redefine the “shoulddo” list to fit their family’s needs and lifestyle.
The workshops, presented by educator and life coach Kanesha Baynard, will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, in the library meeting room and from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, in the library conference room.
