Construction of a pedestrian/bicycle underpass beneath Broadway at Euclid Avenue and other improvements are expected to snarl traffic in the area for the next nine months, but it’s not expected to get really nasty for several weeks.
The Broadway (Euclid to 18th) Transportation Improvements Project got underway this week after being put on hold due to delays in federal and environmental clearances.
Initially, traffic impacts will be limited to daytime off-peak lane closures on Broadway, Euclid, and 16th Streets; detours along the Broadway multi-use path near Euclid Avenue; closures of the northbound bus stop near Euclid Avenue; and a temporary southbound Broadway left lane at 18th Street. But beginning in late 2011 or 2012, there will be full-time lane reductions on Broadway (from two lanes in each direction to one lane each way) and closure of the cross streets (16th and Euclid) to construct the underpass. In addition to the underpass, the project involves expansion of the northbound and southbound transit stops with additional amenities; changing the existing Broadway/Euclid/16th four-way intersection into two “T” intersections; Broadway multi-use path improvements; and several functional art, urban design, landscaping/ irrigation and lighting improvements.
The local funding match for the project was provided by four agencies: the City of Boulder, Boulder County, the Regional Transportation District, and the University of Colorado, which also donated land to the project.
