For once this season, Colorado looked human.
Coming into the game at 6-0, the Buffs, facing 2-5 Idaho,
figured to be a sure lock to roll to victory on Sunday afternoon.
Instead, they found themselves down, 57-56 with only 3:46 to
go in the game. The Buffs responded by rattling off a 12-2 run to win their
seventh straight game, 68-59, and remain undefeated on the young season.
“We ended the game very, very strong,” said second year head
coach Linda Lappe. “Out last three minutes, defensively we finally bucked down
and offensively we hit some key shots.”
Chucky Jeffery hit many of the key shots Lappe referred to.
Jeffery finished with a career-high 30 points and added 10 rebounds for her 14th
career double-double, and her fourth on the season.
“I just played basketball,” said Jeffery. “I didn’t do
anything special. I took what the defense gave me.”
The only other Buff to finish in double figures was freshman
forward Jen Reese, who hit a crucial free throw line jumper to give the Buffs
the lead back for good with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Buffs will have to be sharper going forward than they
were Sunday afternoon. CU shot 35 percent from the field, struggling all
afternoon against the zone defense of Idaho.
Colorado has two games remaining on their six-game home
stand. Now 7-0, the Buffs will put their undefeated record on the line Thursday night
against Denver, the same team that handed CU their first loss last season.
