LET THEM EAT CAKE

South Broadway’s Kim & Jake’s Cakes is planning two new cakes to coincide with upcoming holidays — the foreign holiday and the relatively popular sporting-event holiday, both set for May 5.

That is Cinco de Mayo, of course. Kim & Jake’s plans a Mexi-Cali cake for the occasion, a lemon and corn cake with red jalapeño jelly and fresh avocado butter-cream icing.

Also on May 5 is the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby, for which Kim & Jake’s will make the Derby Julep, named after the popular beverage. The Derby Julep features vanilla-mint cake soaked with Makers Mark bourbon, filled with vanilla custard and iced with mint chip cream cheese.

TWIST ON EARTH DAY

If contemplating the state of our planet’s environment sends you straight to the bottle, Twisted Pine Brewery has your back this Earth Day.

The brewery will be tapping its Earth Day IPA at noon on Sunday, April 22, at its Boulder brewery and ale house at 32nd and Walnut. Every customer sampling the 7 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) India Pale Ale will also receive a free pine tree sapling, though there’s no mention of whether the tree will be twisted.

EATING FOR A CAUSE

Cured, Boxcar and Pizzeria Basta will host a collaborative pop-up dinner on Monday, April 23, at Cured in honor of the Growe Foundation.

The $100 tax-deductible ticket includes a dinner with a Cured charcuterie board, three courses from Chef Kelly Whitaker of Basta and Chef Theo Adley most recently of The Pinyon, Boxcar Coffee and dessert. Colorado beer and wine will be paired with each course. There will be two seatings of 30 people, starting at 5:30 p.m.

And there will be one “private room” for a party of six who get to stay for the whole night. For $150 a person, the private room attendees will also get an extra two courses.
