THEY’RE NOT SERVING PILGRIMS

Celebrating the month, as well as their second decade in Boulder, Mateo Restaurant Provençal will be offering a special “May Flowers” dinner May 29.

The Volio Vino Wine Dinner will feature the gastronomic delicacies of Europe’s Provence Region in four courses — each paired with wine from seasonal small batch varietals located in France and Italy. From the opening Orchid course, which pairs an octopus ceviche with a Riesling, through the Elderflower dessert course that includes gelato, strawberries and honey mousse, the Pearl Street restaurant promises it will be a night to remember.

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Call 303-443-7766 or visit www.mateorestaurant. com for more details.

MEAT AND BOURBON EQUAL H-ELLA GOOD TIME

Denver favorite H Burger will open its new Pearl Street location on May 17, bringing its fare up the turnpike to satiate the meaty desires of Boulder denizens.

In three years since first opening in LoDo, the burger joint has won accolades from Denver’s Burger Battle and Travel & Leisure magazine, while its chocolate milkshake picked up a Best of Westword award for its decadence. Those without a hankering for meat can choose from salads, sandwiches and vegetarian options from the locally owned chain.

If the food doesn’t entice you, maybe the alcohol will. A fully stocked bar featuring contemporary drinks awaits those looking to wash down a busy day along with their burger.

H Burger will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. See www.hburger.com for more details.

BREWING UP GOLD

In news you may already know — Colorado beer manufacturers make some wicked brews. That fact was hammered home at the recent Brewers Associated World Beer Cup, where Colorado brewers took home 27 medals in the blind tasting evaluation dubbed “The Olympics of Beer Competition.”

The ninth bi-annual competition showcased more than 3,900 beers from 54 different countries, judged in 95 style categories. That Colorado brewers culled such a large haul of hardware shows the effort and love this state puts into their quaff. Gold medal winner Kris Oyler of Steamworks Brewing in Durango summed up the ho-hum attitude of dudes who just love beer by saying, “We’re really proud, but not surprised.”

“It’s further proof that Colorado has one of the most advanced beer cultures in the world,” Steve Kurowski of the Colorado Brewer’s Guild said in a press release. The nonprofit trade association provides information for Colorado beer lovers and features 20 of the 27 Colorado award winners under its umbrella.

NO SUCH THING AS TOO MUCH BEER

And for those who don’t think beer culture has invaded all four corners of our proud state, Wynkoop Brewery in Denver has introduced two new beers made especially for Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park.

Elitch Gardens Orchard Wheat and Elitch Gardens Fire Roasted Amber will be previewed at the brewery this week during American Craft Beer Week, with taps in the park opening May 19. The Orchard Wheat features hints of citrus and summertime drinkability. The Fire Roasted Amber gives off a roasted pepper aroma to go with caramel and malt flavors.

ONE DOOR CLOSES, ANOTHER OPENS

Venerable Boulder sushi joint Hapa on the Hill closed last week, 13 years after opening inside the Fox Theatre, leaving its Pearl Street location as the only place in town to serve up the Hapa culture and food that made the restaurant so successful.

The Pennsylvania Avenue location was not shuttered for long, however, as the restaurant has re-opened under new ownership as Sushi Hana.

A call to Sushi Hana confirmed that while the new restaurant will be transitioning to a new menu in the coming months, for the time being the menu remains relatively unchanged.
