Here again is our monthly take on those who have shuffled off this mortal coil:

Alan Goodwin “Dex” Poindexter (Nov. 5, 1961 – July 1, 2012) was an American naval officer and a NASA astronaut, a veteran of two spaceflights who had spent 28 days in space.

Yvonne Bond Miller (July 4, 1934 – July 3, 2012) was the first African-American woman to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia. At the time of her death, the day before her 78th birthday, she was the longest-serving woman in the Virginia Senate.

Eric Sykes, CBE, (May 4, 1923 – July 4, 2012) was a British radio, television and film writer who frequently wrote for or performed with Tony Hancock, Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Johnny Speight. He was noted for his work on The Goon Show scripts and appeared with Hattie Jacques in BBC comedy television series.

Anthony L. Sedlak (April 12, 1983 – July 6, 2012) was a Canadian chef, the host of Food Network Canada’s The Main and author of a cookbook by the same title. He won the Food Network’s Superstar Chef Challenge at the age of 23. Sedlak was 29 at the time of his death.

“Uncle” Lionel Batiste (Feb. 11, 1932 – July 8, 2012) was a jazz and blues musician and singer from New Orleans, the longtime bass drummer for the Treme Brass Band.

Donald J. Sobol (Oct. 4, 1924 – July 11, 2012) was an American award-winning writer best known for his children’s books, especially the Encyclopedia Brown mystery series, which has been translated into 12 languages and never gone out of print.

Roger Payne (July 16, 1956 – July 12, 2012) was a British mountaineer. Payne had been an avalanche instructor since 1977 and a mountain guide since 1983. He took part in more than 20 expeditions to the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, including K2 and the north face of Changabang. Payne was killed with eight other climbers while traversing Mont Maudit on the Mont Blanc massif near Chamonix.

Sage Moonblood Stallone (May 5, 1976 – c. July 13, 2012) was an American actor, film director, film producer and screenwriter. He was the elder son of Sasha Czack and Sylvester Stallone. His acting debut was alongside his father in Rocky V. Initial reports suggested his death, at age 36, was accidental.

Eddy Sixten Jernberg (Feb. 6, 1929 – July 14, 2012) was a Swedish cross-country skier who won four World Championship gold medals and nine Olympic medals. In 12 starts over three consecutive winter Olympics, ending with the 1964 games, he never finished worse than fifth.

Celeste Holm (April 29, 1917 – July 15, 2012) was an American stage, film and television actress, known for her Academy Award-winning performance in Gentleman’s Agreement (1947), as well as for her Oscar-nominated performances in Come to the Stable (1949) and All About Eve (1950), and originating the role of Ado Annie in the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! (1943).

Stephen Richards Covey (Oct. 24, 1932 – July 16, 2012) was the author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Frank Romer Pierson (May 12, 1925 – July 22, 2012) co-wrote the Academy Award nominees Cat Ballou and Cool Hand Luke and wrote Academy Award winner Dog Day Afternoon. He was also a consulting producer for the TV series Mad Men.

Sally Kristen Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012) joined NASA in 1978 and became the first American woman to enter into low-Earth orbit in 1983.

Thelma Glass (May 16, 1916 – July 24, 2012) was secretary of the Women’s Political Council in 1955 and she and other members of that organization helped to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Parks’ arrest.

Lupe Ontiveros (Sept. 17, 1942 – July 26, 2012) acted in numerous films and television shows, most often playing a maid or, more recently, an all-knowing grandmother; she once estimated that she had played a maid at least 150 times on stage and screen. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on Desperate Housewives and received critical acclaim for her role in Chuck and Buck.
