A South African expeditionist was shot multiple times Aug. 26 in the arm and neck while trying to navigate from the source of the Amazon to the Atlantic Ocean.

Davey du Plessis, who started his adventure July 1 in the Andes, reported drug-related danger in the area 10 days ago. The attack took place in the early morning, according to du Plessis’ mother, who updated the adventurer’s fans on Facebook.

Du Plessis’ mother wrote that he was shot in the arm and spine, fell out of his kayak and swam to the shore. He then ran from the river, eventually finding people who “wanted money to help him.” Du Plessis eventually was taken to a hospital in Pucalpa, Peru.
