French government: No fracking ’til ‘clean technologies’ used

France will retain its ban on extracting natural gas from shale until “clean technologies” are invented and replace fracking, the country’s industry minister has announced.

Fracking can cause “irreversible pollution” and must be avoided until it is replaced, said Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg in an interview with French newspaper Les Echos.

The ban was instituted last year by the French parliament and has prevented French oil giant Total SA and others from exploring for shale gas in southern France.
