New Continental Divide Trail route could ban bikes

A new route on part of the Colorado section of the Continental Divide Trail could ban mountain biking.

The section, in the Rio Grande National Forest, is meant to avoid gravel roads that are also used by motorized vehicles and horseback riders. The new route would dodge all the gravel for over 31 miles.

The problem is, the Forest Service proposal also says the new leg shouldn’t be open to bikers. Bikers, the study put out by the Forest Service says, are “not consistent with the overall objectives” of the trail. That’s a throwback to the view of mountain bikes as they were first being used decades ago, but since, mixed-use trails have become very common.
