County offices in Longmont closed due to threats

Boulder closed its offices in Longmont today after threats of violence were called in against the facility. Longmont police responded to the threat, and apprehended the suspect at 10:40 this morning.

“We obviously take these threats seriously,” said Jeff Satur of the Longmont Police Department.

The individual who made the threats had knowledge of the facility that gave Boulder County officials reason to “believe it was a credible threat,” said Barbara Halpin, the Boulder County commissioners’ public information officer.

“He basically said, ‘What happened in Tucson is nothing like what I’m going to unleash on you,” Halpin said.

When the threat was made to Fox 31 news this morning, police notified Boulder County officials.

The Longmont office was originally put on lockdown, with workers advised to stay away from windows and not allowed to go outside the office, before officials made the decision to shut the branch down.  Extra security was also put in place at the Broadway Boulder County office.

Though the suspect has been apprehended, the Longmont office has no plans to open throughout the rest of the day, though they will resume all services tomorrow.

Satur said that this was not the suspect’s first arrest, but that he had no weapons in his possession and submitted to arrest without incident.
