KGNU holds pledge drive

Community radio station KGNU is holding its spring pledge drive until March 19 to support its non-commercial, independent, community radio programming for the Boulder/Denver region.
Now in its 33rd year of operation, KGNU delivers news and public affairs and music programming from both its Boulder and Denver studios. KGNU operates with six full-time employees and more than 300 volunteers.

“Most of our annual budget comes directly from our listeners during these on-air pledge drives,” said Sam Fuqua, KGNU station manager. “We try to make the pledge drive as entertaining as possible with special programming and listeners perks for pledging that include tickets to music shows, books, CDs, etc.”

KGNU’s level of federal financing is 15 percent, and that portion is once again in jeopardy as Republicans in Congress attempt to cut federal funding for public broadcasting.

Fiscal town hall

Several local lawmakers will hold a “town hall” meeting at the University of Colorado at Boulder on Saturday, March 12, to discuss the state’s fiscal crisis.

Rep. Claire Levy, Rep. Deb Gardner and Rep. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst will host the  meeting from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the CU Visual Arts Building, at 1095 18th St. A representative from the Colorado Fiscal Policy Institute, Mark Neuman-Lee, will also be in attendance to answer questions.

Bald for the cause

St. Baldrick’s, the annual fundraising event in which individuals shave their heads as a sign of solidarity with children who have cancer, will be held on Saturday, March 12, beginning at 10 a.m. at Celestial Seasonings, 4600 Sleepytime Dr.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Those who support a participant or team at the event will have their name appear on their donor list.
