An Australian research team, working together with the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, found that coral reefs along mainland China and in the South China Sea have decreased by 80 percent over the last 30 years.

The study pointed to economic development and increased fishing activity as the main causes of reef degradation.

China’s economic development has come at great expense to the environment. Its water and air pollution are often cited among the worst in the world.
