Like the racist grandfather who finally changes his mind when a relative marries a minority, some of us don’t understand an issue until it’s plopped right at our doorstep.

Now, we’re not saying that’s the case for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has certainly discussed climate change, green energy and environmentalism before. Bloomberg’s no stranger to those issues.

But he certainly had it plopped at his city’s doorstep this week. And he’s taken the opportunity to run with it.

Bloomberg announced a last-minute endorsement for President Barack Obama after Superstorm Sandy tore through New York, saying the president’s recognition of climate change as a real problem tipped the scales for him. Finally, the environment is part of the election conversation.
